Bari is the gateway to the East, it is the city that houses the relics of St Nicholas, the saint who indisputably links the Church of the East and the Church of Rome. The Basilica dedicated to the saint is a place of pilgrimage for all the faithful of the Orthodox faith, who come to Bari to pay homage to the saint, in an atmosphere of peace and prayer...

The Apulian capital is also the most important port on the southern side of the Adriatic, from here ferries depart daily for the’Albania, the Greece, Montenegro and the Croatia. The connection Bar Bari is one of the oldest from the Apulian port, the first voyage dates back to 1965, and since then it has been operated continuously by the historic ship Sveti Stefan until 2016. In the following years, until 2022, the route was operated by the Croatian company Jadrolinija, and has been suspended since 2023.

In the history of the city of Bar, discovering its civilisation amidst myths and legends, it is worth dwelling on the etymology of its name: Αντιβάριον for the Greeks, Antibarium for the Latins. And as if to mark the geographical proximity to the Italian port, the Montenegrin city was named “opposite Bari”, a proximity that facilitated trade and cultural exchanges between the two ports. King Nicholas I of Montenegro himself, father of Italy's Queen Elena, often travelled to Bari as a devotee of the cult nicolaian and for purchases. La city of Bari dedicated a statue to him on the main avenue Vittorio Emanuele II. In July 2024, at the opening ceremony of the Montenegrin consulate in Bari, honorary consul Franco Giuliano highlighted the importance of cooperation relations between the Apulia region and the Montenegro, to enrich the economic and cultural links between the two sides of the Adriatic.

Documents required for travel

Accommodation on the ship Bar Bari

The personnel on board the ship Bar Bari has been instructed to provide safe access and appropriate assistance to PRM passengers in a caring and efficient manner. Travelling by car or motorbike on the Bar Bari ferry

If you spent your holidays in Montenegro with your own car or motorbike and now you return home, you only have to show your original documents both at check-in and at the Border Police checkpoint.

Non-EU citizens travelling to Italy with a car registered in their own country must be in possession of the original vehicle registration certificate, translated into English, and the international insurance card (green card). Remember that vehicles with foreign number plates may circulate in Italy for a maximum period of 3 months.

The low season car rate is 85 euro, and the motorbike 35 euro. To those who purchase a return ticket for the vehicle, on the This is Bari Bar will be applied the discount of 20%.

Booking a camper van or caravan on the ferry

For the campers on board the ship Bar Bari, there are reserved seats in the ship's large garage, but only in closed areas, on the lower decks, where access is forbidden during navigation. If you have booked your ticket with camper or caravan, you should only carry out the check-in and boarding procedures, following the guidance of the staff.

Bringing a pet on board the ship

If you are travelling with a dog and don't want to miss out on a walk on the open deck, remember that on board the ferries Bar Bari a leash, muzzle and hygiene bags are compulsory.

For cats, on the other hand, as well as for rabbits and hamsters, we recommend a pet carrier to keep with you at all times, in which you have previously sprayed a product whose odour calms it. In this way, the animal is reassured and will travel without the slightest discomfort.

When entering Italy, the competent authorities will ask for the pet's EU passport and vaccination certificate.

I am travelling without a vehicle, where can I leave my luggage
