Information and tips for ferry travel

What is the distance between the two ports?

Bar is 124 nautical miles away and the maritime connection is operated by the Croatian company Jadrolinija from June until mid-November, on a weekly basis. The ship departs every Wednesday at 21:00 and arrives in the Montenegrin port at 08:00 the next day.

How long is the ferry trip from Bari to Bar?

The journey takes 11 hours and the ferry on the Bari Bar route carries both passengers, accommodated in cabins or armchairs, and accompanying vehicles, camper vans, minibuses and commercial vehicles, offering travellers all the necessary comforts for a relaxing and pleasant overnight trip.

 Are there hydrofoils or fast ferries on the Bari Bar line?

No, there are no hydrofoils, catamarans or fast ferries connecting the port of Bari with Bar in Montenegro. Only large ferries travel the route and the average journey time is about 11 hours.

Documents required for travel

If you are travelling to Bar for a holiday of less than 1 month, you do not need an entry visa. It is important to check before travelling that all travellers have original and valid passports or valid identity cards.

To drive a car in Montenegro it is compulsory to have a driving licence, vehicle registration card and an insurance policy covering the country with you. Otherwise, a temporary policy, valid for the days of the holiday, is taken out on arrival.

What are the procedures for checking in and boarding the ship?

After completing the online purchase of the Bari Bar ship ticket, you will receive your ferry ticket in digital format by email. Our advice is to arrive at least 3 hours before departure at the boarding offices located in the Marisabella area of the port of Bari, entrance from the Varco della Vittoria in Corso Vittorio Veneto, near the eastern entrance of the Fiera del Levante.

After completing check-in procedures, passengers not travelling in a vehicle wait for the free shuttle that will take them back to the Pier San Vito Passenger Terminal of Port of Bari, where they will have to pass security and border police checks. All those with an accompanying car, motorbike or camper van will check in at gate AC1 on quay C3.

Once on board, the ship's staff will guide passengers to the parking area and reception on board.

Accommodation on the ship Bari Bar

When booking, travellers can select between different accommodations on the ship from Bari to Bar.

• The bridge crossing standard is the cheapest accommodation on the ferry and does not give any right to an assigned seat. Passengers who choose to travel in decks can sit in common areas such as bars or open-air decks.
• La numbered seat provides accommodation in reclining seats, positioned in a large, spacious and air-conditioned aircraft-type lounge, where the passenger can rest during the crossing.
• With a slight difference, travellers can choose to rest in comfortable cabins, which are located on the upper decks of the ferry, all with private toilets. There are different types of cabins on board, internal or external, with 2 or 4 beds, and from our Ferry Portal they can also be booked for exclusive use should there be fewer travellers than beds available.

Services offered on board

During the crossing, passengers can enjoy the facilities on board the ship that the company has provided to make the journey pleasant and relaxing. All common areas within the ship are large, well-lit and air-conditioned spaces.

Booking and Boarding for Persons with Reduced Mobility 

The personnel on board the Bari Bar ferries is very attentive to the needs and requirements of PRM passengers, and all barriers that may hinder access for people with disabilities have been removed along the compulsory routes. Travelling by car or motorbike on the Bari Bar ferry

If you travel for Montenegro with your car or motorbike, make sure you have the original documents with you such as your driving licence, registration card and that the country is included on your green card. If this is not the case, you should take out temporary insurance upon arrival.

The cost of the trip for the car alone is 85 euro, including taxes, one-way fare. For the motorbike, on the other hand, you spend 35 euro. On the journey of the return Bar Bari all vehicles benefit from the reduction of 20%, if the ticket was purchased at the same time as the outward ticket.

Booking a camper van or caravan on the ferry

On the ferry of the Jadrolinija from Bari to Bar in Montenegro it is possible to travel by taking your own motor home or caravan, but you cannot use them to sleep during the crossing. This is why we recommend that you book a cabin on overnight departures and prepare everything you need for the trip in time, as you will not even be able to access the garage area during the crossing.

The entry of animals at Montenegro is only allowed to those in possession of an EU passport, where vaccinations are listed, and a health certificate issued by a veterinarian.

I am travelling without a vehicle, where can I leave my luggage

On the ships of the This is Bari Bar you are allowed to leave your luggage at the luggage depot for all those not travelling with a vehicle. The service is free of charge and suitcases and other personal belongings can be collected upon disembarkation in the port of Bar.
